I have just got my 460engine up and running , I put it in a 83 XE sedan ( I am in Australia ) I have been told that my 670 cfm Street Avenger is to small for my engine ! my car runs a 4 speed Toploader gearbox, 9 inch rear with a 3-5 ratio. i told my mechanic that in the 80's they put 600cfm Holley's on the 460 engines, He has stated that I should use at least a 850cfm vacume secondry, I have the Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold , Pace maker Headers, Edelbrock Hi-Flo water pump. Car weighs roughly 1750 kilo's. my engine is fully reconditioned ( Stock- from Ford in Detroit ) would any-one have a idea on what carb i should use, Thanks again. Jamie.
Why recommend an odd ball size like that? With a stock cam and heads the 670 will be more than enough and overcarburation is costly in fuel with no preformance gain.
Carb CFM = [(Cubic Inches x RPM)/3456] x volumetric efficency

I would recommend for every day use to stay with a vacuum secondary. Mechanical secondaries while they can be used on the street are more for racing or special applications.
Yeah the 735 is an oddball size, I'd forgotten it was a rare carb that came on the 428 Cobra Jet 69 Cobra Torino. But I recommended this in case a guy wants to upgrade to headers and a bumpier cam in the future, carbs are expensive !

I know where the 735 came from. I had a pair of 428CJs in a '69 Failane Cobra fastback and a '69 notchback. Both very fast and also very quick. But a 750 would be more reasonable and way less expensive. But with todays gas prices going up I would think the a smaller carb would still be bestas will he every hot rod this much engine in this light a car. I doudt it as it's gonna be a bitch to turn and way.
a 600cfm carb is plenty on a 460 turning anything less than 5500 rpm, and will actually give you more lowend and better fuel economy. the 670 would be a great comprimise, and give enough room for improvements to the engine, and have actually seen a big block produce more power with a 650 over a 750 on the same engine on a dyno.
Or you could run a 600 carb body ported modified to fit a 750 throttle plate that was converted to four corner idle and converted back, front and rear metering plates from the 750 ...
Oh heck if your not going high performance 600 or 650 recomend vacuum secondarys if your looking for economy .... off road go with double pumper.
I'm currently running a 750 vac sec on my 460 in my 53 F-250. The plugs arent fouled, and it gets around 13 MPG in town, and about 16-17 on the freeway. Those numbers were before I put on the Jacobs electronics though, so now it likely gets a few more MPGs. The 750 is just fine as long as it is TUNED for the motor. The 600 is more streetable though and probably more comfortable to drive with......Although I would have to ASSUME that since I have never actually run a 600 on my 460.
