tire pressure

I have a 2000 X and I just got a new set of tires. The door jam tells me that the rear should be at 55 and the front at 45. Firestone set them all at 32. They looked like they were flat. I set them to the 55 and 45 and they seem to be a little hard driving around the city, not that bad. I don't tow anything so whats the best setting that will not kill my gas millage and not wear the tires out pre maturely.
Thaks in adance.

With a truck that weighs 8K pounds, I use the maximum PSI listed on the tire. Ford's PSI spec's are nothing but the minimum. My E-rated tires (Nitto 305-70R-16) only allow 65 PSI while most E-rated tires allow 80 PSI.

I run around 40-45 psi in front and back on my Perilli Scorpians. I find this pressure good for a confortable ride and decent handling as well .
