I have noticed the in the past few days that I'm getting a weird sound in the front end. It sorta feels like and sounds like a u-joint while turning sharp and going slow, but while sharp turning going fast it sounds like differential whine. I did spin the front shafts and they seem to spin free with no catches so now I'm thinking that I should be checking the wheel bearings and brake (brakes are about due to be changed anyhow). What should I look for as far as the wheel bearings and anything else that anyone can think of. i use this truck as a daily driver and have some long trips coming up in the very near future so any help would be welcome. Thanks.
Jock and unlock your hubs a couple of times. If it is giving you a clung at low speed tight turns then one of your hubs is locked. If you have ESOF, this happens. Mine does it too, just doesn't always disengage. I make it a point to manually lock the hubs before I flip the switch then manually unlock when done with 4X4.
I'm not saying this is the problem but it's an easy one to check and can present the same symptoms. Someone else who knows front ends can offer other possible solutions.
Don't know what year model you have there but I had what sounds like a similar situation and it was my tie rod assembly. Replaced it and no more problems.
i also have an odd noise that seems to come from the passanger side of the vehicle. seems to go with the speed of the truck up to about 20miles peer hour then goes away only to return when im slowing down. brakes dont seem to stop the noise shifting to neutral no differance putting in 4x4 doesnt help either only whe i hit about 5 mph it will stop. the sound is hard to explain but is not as high pitched as a brake squeel but still has a whine to it.

Well I took a good look at everything yesterday and I could get the noise with the front end raised and just spinning the front wheel by hand, so I tore into it. finally got the hub out and just spinning it by hand it was clicking. There was a little bit of black dust in the spline assembly so I did blow it all out good. It also sounds like I will be replacing the spindle bearing before long as it has a slight noise also when spinning the wheel by hand. So until I can get a new auto/manual hub I put it back together and it has at least stopped making the noise for now. Does anyone know where to get a decent price on the parts without buying directly from FORD? Thanks for all the help.
