Has anyone installed the DieselSite or similar transfilter?
My concern is having a thinwalled filter exposed under my truck... One good trip over an unseen blown tread on the highway and I would expect possible rupture.
I suppose one could create and bolt on a skid plate or do they mount high enough to afford some level of protection.
I had a similar dilemma with my external fuel filter. I ended up building a skidplate for it, but a higher mount probably would have worked as well. I just couldn't go up anymore with it.
A smaller, inline type filter would also drastically reduce the chance of impact damage.

i had a remote trans filter on my older truck. the filter was mounted to the bumper bracket in the front wheel well ... hmmmmmmm. stone being thrown from the tire rotation might have damaged the filter, but luckily I made it thru that. I believe I got it thru a camper magazine and dont remember if i filtered before cooling or after. there's my nickel ... done.
I have a 2000 with an external trans filter mounted on my bumper bracket bolts behind my front bumper. Yes, it's in the wheelwell, and subject to stones thrown by the front tires, but I plan to install custom-shaped plastic stone shields to solve that problem.
Thanks guys... Sounds like most options leave a degree of risk, not sure I want to gamble.
cookie88, any info on where I might an in-line type? I'm pretty sure that it will either have to be that or if I do the regular filter type, I'll figure out some way to install a skid plate.
Stock external trans filter on the 04 sd with the tourk shift trans mounts on the inside of the passanger side frame rail next to radiator it sits out of the way, and is protected there.
I've installed the dieselsite filter. I had some of your same concerns, but mounted the filter all the way near the top of the frame rail, with the top of the bracket pointed forward and the filter itself pointing toward the rear of the truck.
It's really a pretty small assembly, and the baldwin filters seem pretty sturdy. I figure it's nowhere near the weakest link of the chain on my rig...
I have one that I got at camping world and have it mounted on the passenger side frame rail just after the radiator. The only part of it is that it is a pain to get the filter tight by hand being so close to the frame, but it is well protected there. I have it in-line before the coolers as I figured it would keep the garbage from getting in the coolers and plugging them. It takes a regular fl1A filter that I change out everytime that I do an oil change on the engine. I have had it on there for 40,000 miles now and the tranny fluid still looks and smells like new.
