Check the metal tag usually on one of the bolts at the rear axle wear the third member bolts into the pumpkin. The second line of text, first three digits should give you the information you want. You'll probably need a a rag and / or wire brush.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Jul-02 AT 01:06 PM (EST)]thanks for the info but still not real sure what I am looking at. I found the tag and the numbers are
...or maybe it was the first line of text...sorry about that. I'd check the first line again...particularly the 2 72. My best guess is a 2.73 & since you found no "L" - an open differential. I'm sure another member here can give a second opinion.
The "D7" means 1977. The 603903 is the Bill of Materials number but this number is not on the Dana site or my Dana books. Check it again. I did not see this entire thread. Is it a rear or front?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Jul-02 AT 07:12 PM (EST)]It is rear...2wd truck...I rechecked it and those are the right numbers. Thank you so much for your help
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Jul-02 AT 07:15 PM (EST)]Haha...thanks for the help. I guess the world may never know what rearend is under my truck. I don't think 2 72 is right though. Gets off the line way too fast for that to be the case.
Support the rear axle with jackstands, put it in neutral, and count how many times the drive shaft rotates per tire rotation. You'll also find out if you have limited slip or an open differential for sure.
Hey bryan are you sure you counted that right you either have very small tires or extremely low gear ratio.Make sure you mark that driveshaft and tire to make sure you count it correctly and try it again.
doesn't sound right to me eaither. I have 70 series tires....don't have the exact measurements but they are larger then stock and I did mark both driveshaft and tire. I think I will just have to pull the cover. Thanks
