I have a '76 f250 with a 390 rebuilt last year.I put an Edelbrock 1406(600 cfm, electric choke)on it two years ago.Two weeks ago on my way home from work doing 65 mph all of a sudden no power. The engine bogged so bad I could barely keep it going at 20 mph.The engine finally died and I was able to roll into a guy's driveway.I pulled the fuel line past the filter at the carb and turned the engine over.Fuel pump is working fine.Hooked the line back up it started and I drove it home.Anyway to keep this from getting to long here is what I have replaced to date.Coil, module, filters(pump and at carb),fuel pump. When I replaced the fuel pump I took a compresser and blew air from the pump line into the tank(no restriction)and from the pump to the carb(same thing). Now from the start this problem has been intermitant. All thats left is the carb so this morning I put the 600 cfm carter AFB that was on the truck when I bought it.So far it runs fine. What could be causing this in the new Edelbrock carb?
Maybe some random piece of crap floating around in the tank got stuck to the fuel pickup, and then after the pump was shut off it unstuck it's self and floated away? Happened to me in a Jeep I had once, but the piece of crap never floated away.
The 1406 is really an easy carb to work on. Take it apart (can get the instructions from the Edelbrock website)...clean it out and look it over. Check the floats, the needle/seat areas. I had junk get past my filter once on my 1406...had to remove the carb and take apart. The float got stuck...and the piece of junk was still there stuck. Cleaned it out...and so far so good. Oh ya...that was years back too.
Of course...while in there...I decided to re-jet/re-meter rod and add the 4x4 spring loaded needle/seat setup.
Thank's for the replies.Well after two days with the old carb on it did it again yesterday afternoon.I have the tank ready to pull out from behind the seat.I pulled the sender and the fill neck off. This way I can shine a light through one hole and look in the other.
I can't really see anything but I am going to pull it and clean it anyway.Does anyone have a good method for cleaning and rinseing a fuel tank?
has any one suggested the module or pick up coil yet? it may not be a fuel problem at all. alot of folks replace the module several times when the problem is actually the pickup coil in the distributer. the symptoms you describe are also commom to those parts
I had kind of ruled out any ignition or electrical problem because normally there is some backfiring or spitting going on.It had to be a fuel delivery problem. So I had the tank all ready to pull out sending unit off, fill tube off, pickup tube off.I took a look in the tank by shining a light in the sending unit hole and looking through the fill tube,I could not see anything.Started to siphon fuel and got about a gallon out decided to take a break.Again I shined a light and looked and low and behold there is a small cardboard disc sitting right by the pickup tube in the tank.It looks like what you would have found years ago on a bottle of heet or something like that.Anybody know if they still use these on any fuel additives these days? As far as I know now they use the foil covers or plastic that you pull off.
