I've got a 1994 Ford Bronco 351 with the E4OD tranny. For the last several months I have had some tranny problems that I feel are associated with the converter but I thought I would ask. I've bought another house and currently making two house payments. Normally I would spend the money and just have the complete tranny rebuilt with a new converter. With money being alittle tight I've thought of just replacing the converter myself to save $1500 but don't want to waist my time. My symptoms are as such.
My tranny slips from time to time for just a few seconds. The slipping always occurs at highway speeds and after the tranny has a good warm up (20 to 30 miles). I've placed the tranny in third gear (without overdrive) and forth gear but the tranny slips just the same. Wether I'm going up hill or have a load does not seem to matter. I have a little, what I would call, converter rattle when pulling away from a stop. My tranny was slipping bad once and I over filled the tranny by a quart of fluid and that was a year ago. For almost a year the tranny has not slipped until recently but again it is not that bad. Driving around town and the tranny does not slip.
Will I be okay replacing the converter or should I just wait and do the complete rebuild. Thanks guys, all comments welcome. I've got around 165,000 miles on the truck and assume the tranny has never been rebuilt.
have you pulled tranny codes? if your tranny is having issue it will trip a code and give you an idea of where to go. when was your last fluid and filter change, i would start there as well. there is an mlp solenoid on there that controls shifting and converter lock up etc.. if its failing it may cause your symptoms
Hey Kemicalburns it's been awhile. Yup, I replace my tranny fluids and filter every year. As far as the tranny codes, I'm E4OD stupid, are they hooked up to the check engine light or something different.
