The 77 I got has two saddle tanks that bolt to the bed and fit between the bed and the frame. Both are 17 gallons and there is a tank select switch in the cab on the floor next to the drivers seat. If I knew how to post a picture I would show them to you.
The 76 I got was just like this. Now it is just a frame.
Hey HighboyMac, my truck has the tank you're looking for. It mounts to the frame near the transfer case and hangs from the bed near the rear axle. I will get under it and take some measurements this weekend. The front mounts from two tabs on the tank, one on top and one on bottom. Bolts pass through them over and under the frame then through a 1/4" steel bar on the outside of the frame. The back hangs from eye hooks into holes in the cross member of the bed.
Has anyone found a replacement sending unit for this tank, Carquest has a generic unit but says the reading won't be right even with a resistor. They say you get get either full or empty to read right but not both. Thoughts?
That would be really helpful. Would you be able to take a couple photo's of the tank for me as well? What has been you impression of having the weight of that tank in that location. Does it seem to alter the ride of truck or make it sag to one side?
I'll take some photos, it may tke a day or 2 to figure out how to post them but i'll get it done. The tank has been no problem at all. I've had it in and out over the last few months trying different sending units and have not noticed any difference in the ride or stance. Although my truck is a f250, that might help. I'll post next week when I get back from my antelope hunt out here in AZ.
