Question Front end ?????'s

I know this topic has been beaten to death but I am about to embark on a front end swap and I have never done anything like this before, so if you dont mind I probably will be leaning on all the Ford genius's on the site for a while. I just picked up a 74 f100 super cab, I want to put the front end in my 67, you know for power brakes, steering and disk up front. I assume that I will have to switch steering columns and linkage as well? Will the 67 front fit on the 74 ( so I can roll it around and haul it to the junkyard) Any tips, tricks and suggestions would be wonderful. Also any links to good threads that deal with this subject would also be cool. I have been doing a lot of reading on the site the past few days trying to prepare myself for the project.

67, Everything should be a direct bolt up exchange. With a bud to help, you should be able to make the swap in a weekend. My preference is to swap the whole I-beam assembly. You will need a big pry bar to get the axle beams in and out of the frame, the rubber mounts are tight. It looks harder than it actually is. Remove everything at the top of the coil springs before you jack up the truck and they will extend with no problems.

You will need two sets of jack stands, one for each truck.

Good luck

John

The article has you replacing the spindles and using your I Beam. I don't disagree with this, but have found it easier to replace the I Beam with the spindles. This means that you do not need to mess with the kingpins, unless you want to.

If you do replace the king pins remember that Ford used different sizes for different weight ratings - at least this is true on my 72 F250. Just one more item to check. Also, I would not use a torch to heat up the spindle when removing the king pins - again just my way of doing things. I worry that overheating the spindles will make them weak.

i agree with both of you. no need to pull it all apart unless you need to do the king pins and never use heat on the suspension. i was doing a ground up restomod so it all had to come apart. good luck.

Thanks all for the topic and information, I will soon be swaping the front end from a 74 doner to my 71.
What about 67f100's steering box question? it seems I have read in other posts that a 73-78 steering colum wont fit a 67-72 gear box. Is that correct?

If the 67 has a manual box or a power Bendix box the newer column will not fit as they are shorter for the longer Ford box. The firewall plate, pitman arm and box must also be changed if you use a Ford box column. Now would be a good time to change from the Bendix to a Ford box as the Bendix is costly to rebuild.

My plan is to change everything. I dont have power steering, I dont have power brakes, and I dont have Front disc. So While I had the parts truck I was going to try and do it all lock stock and barrel. So if I change everything out, is it bolt in. I ask because I can turn a wrench but I am not a welder nor do I have access to one. So if there is any of that kind of modification involved I would like to know before hand. If I change the steering box as well as the front end, can I/ must I use the steering column out of the doner truck( I would like to, it's in a little better shape). As well as the linkage from the firewall to the steering box. And someone mentioned a couple of posts up that the 74 might be wider? is there any truth to that? Oh yea, one more question, will the 74 front bumper fit the 67? it's chrome and mine is painted.

67, Everything will exchange, the 74 I-beam & front bumper is the same. The only difference is in the steering gear to column fit placement. The Ford Power gear has more length on the top where the hydrolic lines go in, this causes the need for a shorter column. The total length is the same for both setups. The connect point is shifted closer to the firewall with the ps setup. This causes problems for trucks with 3 spd on the column. There weren't as many manual shift ps trucks built in that era.

You should have everything that you need for a conversion, if the engine/tranny combo is the same in both trucks. I wanted to loose the 3 spd on my truck so the 76 donor with FE & C6 was just the ticket for me.

Both I believe are c6 tranies and fe motors. so the steering column set up should not be a problem?

The first year of C-6 trans in trucks was 68, your 67 will have a iron case (not a C-6) vs aluminum case C-6.

Im not exactly sure it the factory transmission. I will go check. If it is the original, should I assume it is the c4?

I checked on the transmission and it has a 14 bolt pan (In my 86 ranger you can tell which trans it has by the number of bolts in the pan) Is this a c4 or c6?

The C-4 has 11 pan bolts, FMX has 14 bolts and the C-6 16 bolts. That FMX is a pre C-6 in many ways but not as good, hard to get parts for and expensive to rebuild. If the trucks a keeper I would locate a spare C-6 should the FMX need rebuild, a friend spent $1,400 on his FMX. On the front end the manual and Bendix boxes have a long column ( 2"-2 1/4") longer than the Ford power steering box trucks. With the longer Ford box you use a shorter column (2"-2 1/4") shorter. You need to replace the left motor perch with the one off the donor and use the forward 2 bolts on the crossmember. Use the firewall column mount plate from the donor also. Pump, mounting bracket as well extra crank pulley for the pump.
