transfer case oil

transfer case oil
i have an 87 ford 250 4x4 and i was wondering what type of oil i use for the transfer box?? if anyone could help me it would be very appreciated.

most folks use somethign like 80 weight gear oil. i use 80w90 non-detergent and does me quite well!

I use ATF in my heap...Of course this is a chain driven t-case...

thats an excellent point jeremy! chain drives use ATF and gear drives take gear oil (respectively)

I'd go with either Mobil 1 or Motorcraft synthetic 75w90.

even the walmart gear oil will work well in there for only 2.00 a quart. it surpasses the original standard for that truck.

How about a '76 F250 with a chain drive NP 203? I don't think I have ATF in there.

in a np 203 you can get away with 80w90 gear lube.

Thanks, that's what I used to run in my '75 F250 with an NP203. Someone told me I should use 30W. That seems kind of thin for a gear box. How about 10W40 for the winter? Is that still too thin?

10w40 is motor oil and not made for a gear box. use hypoid gear oil only.
