Played with the pedal and there is a metallic clicking coming from the steering column, NOT the plunger assembly. Brake lights work, but sometimes stick on, even after the car is off....thinking it's a relay or in the blinker pigtail somewhere...????
You say you got noise in the steering column? I believe that the brake light circuitry feeds through the turn signal switch. You may want to give that a little TLC.

Noise is defenitely in the column area...could be the signal switch...couldnt tell with my head buried under the dash.
Other than replacing the turn signal switch completely, what other TLC is there?
When you pull the steering wheel you may find that a simple retaining screw or something else conductive may be bouncing around in there and causing the intermittent symptoms. I do not believe that there is any rebuild on the switch itself, but these seldom actually break unless they have been over torqued or abused in some manner.
Decided against doing it myself. Have done plenty of Jeep steering clumns, but none had airbags. I'm a bit scared of messing up the airbag, plus..it's the girl's truck.....
switch on the pedal is fine, tested it with my meter.....clicking is coming from the column.....it may be sending a faulty signal though.....i don't know

Once again, the clicking is the relay used to unlock the steering column. It is normal and happens every time the brake is pressed and the vehicle is in PARK.
Sometimes it is louder than other times, but it is always there.
If the switch seems OK, then it probably is further down the line, bulbs, sockets, wires, etc.
the light acuator swith on the brake pedal needed to be adjusted....didnt know it was adjustable...yes, that clicking sound is normal, never noticed it before though...ya learn sumthin new everyday I guess

Reviving a VERY old thread.
I have the same symptom on my 05 Escape XLT. The brake lights stay on but if I pull up on the pedal, they go off and I hear a faint click. I assume the problem is in the actuator mentioned above. Can someone comment on the "adjustment" process? It might be painfully obvious when I get home to look at it, but I figured I'd do some research while I'm in the office.
