Alternator just died in my '89 aerostar 3.0, and while digging around noticed that my belts could use replacing. The previous owner had some sort of problem with the air conditioner and cut the wires to it, but the pump is still being driven by the belt. Is there a belt I can use to bypass the A/C and then pull it and make some more room in the already cramped engine compartment? I don't need AC where I live and I shudder to think how much it might cost to fix it.
not sure if there is a replacement belt that allows you to delete the a/c comp. you might try this old trick....use string to determine length and routing of belt without the comp. if you can route it safely, take the old belt and the new length(the string you just used) to the auto-parts store. locate the nearest salesperson that seems friendly (you might be taking some time here) and try to match the old belt type,#of grooves, width, etc. to a new belt of the new length. if you're feeling especially spunky, a good idea is to get both the longest and shortest (adjustment-wise) length marked on the string. that way you have more options when finding the new belt.
There were Aeros sold without A/C I know both the 3.0 and 4.0 had this option so just go to your local parts store and they will ask you with or without A/C. Just ask for the one without A/C.
Being the extremely generous person I am I posted the belt diagrams for both the 3.0 and 4.0 Aeros from my Ford parts CD I recommend you get one if you intend to do work on your Aero they're a great help.
Notice each picture has a routing diagram for Aeros Without A/C thats the way you must route your new Without A/C belt.

This is very odd, my aero doesn't match any of those belt configurations. It's an 89 with air, but I don't have the pulley #4 drive belt tensioner. I've got the tensioner #2 between the alternator and power steering pump though.
Mine also took two belts, one running the alternator and A/C, the other smaller belt just running the Power Steering.
good God, when I saw those diagrams, I thought the belt configs were some sort of joke. Then I looked further and that is what those poor belts really do.
Its available on E-bay for about $10.00 just search for Ford Aerostar CD.
The diagrams above I found on Autozone's site since my Ford CD is for 1996 3.0 and 4.0 Aeros. But since the engine design of Aeros didn't change much over the years I can use it on different years. With your 89 the exception due to the dual drive belts.
