Quick question!! Getting ready for this hurricane that's on it's way, and may be fording through high water. Wondering what I should be worried about or if there are any precautions that I should do before hand mechanically speaking. I know diesels dont succumb to high water as easy as gasoline engines due to the glow plugs, but is there anything else I should be worried about? 02 F-250 7.3ltr w/ 8" lift and 35" tires. Magnaflow exhaust, tymar intake, and edge chip. thanks
Well, all your intakes are high, so you shouldn't get water into anything as long as it stays out of the cab. BUT, if the water might get as high as the fan, even with the fan clutch unlocked it will throw water all over the engine compartment. That'll be a mess and could short something important. With the serpentine belt, you can't simply take the fan belt off. Next best is to just remove the fan. Four studs I think from the front of the fan; might be a tight squeeze due to the shroud. Maybe unbolt the shroud and move it back first.
Be careful not to plunge into the water with very hot manifolds and exhaust. Not good for cast iron, and quick-cooling the exhaust might suck some water back into the pipes/muffler.
The truck should stay cool enough idling through the water; be sure to put the fan back on before hitting the road. Later on, check the front of the radiator to be sure you haven't clogged it with seaweed!!
Good Luck

uhhh get the hell out of there now not when you are going through deep water. come on. i live in florida and deal with these things quite often. as long as no water gets in your intake you should be ok or enters your idm. and dont drive fast through deep standing water.
Ditto, don't wait, leave ASAP.
I wouldn't want to be driving through water, ya never know when the road will disappear.
Well, you'll know when your front end falls in and you're stuck...
Be safe, ok?
Man...that's what the 8" lift with the 35's are for!! LOL ... Jus kidding, on a more serious note, good luck TXF-250 and don't do anything stupid like some people are doing on tv. Best to you.
Just guessing, but I'll assume your work will not allow you to leave (emergency services or military). If not, this storm is now the 3rd most intense cane in recorded history. It's internal pressure is down to 899mb, the lowest recorded was Gilbert in 1988 and IIRC, it reached a min of 888mb. It's fully expected this storm will get lower, and may even get down to 885mb (which would be the most intense hurricane/cyclone/anticyclone to every hit that level...recorded history anyhow). 885mb would most likely cause a pressure wave that could be observed from MANY miles away. Pressure wave back in the winter storm in 1985(maybe) caused a sonic boom as the pressure changed so dramatically.
If your not being kept in region for work, please, seek high and safer ground inland and come in behind the storm...safety everso more important as the scenery will surely have changed, and will still likely be in the evolving state.
based on what kregars said, i would probably get the heck out of there as fast as i can. nice info by the way kregars, i learned something today! i went to school all day and learned nothing :X
Thanks tons guys!! I am a Sgt. with the police force here in southeast texas. We dont yet know what this bad boy is doing, so for now the stroker could be transformed into a search/rescue vehicle. We are about 50 miles inland so unless we get a direct hit we should be ok. Many thanks again and god bless.
My fingers are crossed for you. Hope you and the folks around you stay ok. Hope the people in the path get out now, and are ok. Not a good thing coming.
You dont want to be driving in 100mph plus winds. I saw a truck blown off the road at these types of speeds. Last year in Florida I saw a dodge cummins only doing about 30mph blow right off I-95 into the median and the winds werent even close to the wind speeds your gonna see. So leave early and be safe...

Best of luck, Sgt. Keep yourself safe so you can help all those others.
