Performance Exhaust

Has anyone changed there exhaust on the 2003 navigator i just want to change the muffler not do a full catback exhaust..which one would you guys recommend i want to keep almost or if possible totally stock as fas as the noise inside the cabin is concerned.

Also what Intake would you guys recommend or would you guys just go with a drop in filter, has anyone gone full synthetic have you notice any difference.

We have to run Premium fuel 91 in order for our trucks to run smooth correct

I also have an 03 Navi. A few companies sell full catback systems but they cost about $400. Keep in mind we have a huge muffler and a much smaller resonator near the tailpipe - so you'll probably want both cut out and the main muffler replaced with an aftermarket one and just straight pipe put in place of the smaller one.

As far as intakes there are probably 3-4 companies that make similar products. K&N makes the FIPK for about $230. Ebay is a good source.

Also, SCT makes the xcalibrator 2 with tuning for the 03 Navi available. It costs about $400 last time I checked. Probably the most usefull of the 3 things I mentioned.

Also, FYI, Kenne Bell makes a 2.2L Blower kit for the 99-04 Navi. It is approx $4000 and gets you a solid 100+ extra FT*LBS from just off idle!

Yes, I have all synthetic fluids - no noticable difference but you cant feel 5HP in a 6K LB truck. The OEM tuning is for 91 octane and that is what most owners run (premium)

how about if i just want to replace the muffler and leave the resonator there would that work on keeping the noise near stock in the cabin and how much do those run.

You have a lot of choices when it comes to mufflers. Prices for a single muffler for your Navi would be about $70-150 for the part. For install assuming they also cut out the resonator and replace that segment with pipe your probably looking at $100 labor (depending on where you live).

Ive had exhaust work done on all my previous cars and have usually just brought the new muffler to the exhaust shop and paid to have it installed. The cat-back kits are very nice but not worth the $400+ they charge.

Just wondering why you want to replace the muffler only, yet are concerned about the noise it will produce. Most people change the muffler only strictly FOR the sound, as you will see little or no change in performance if you retain the stock piping. To get any performance gains you really need an entire exhaust sytem with larger, mandrel bent pipes and a better flowing muffler.

As far as intakes, that debate has been done, re-done and done again on this site. Just do a search for intakes and you'll get all the info you'll ever want on the subject. But, in a nutshell, the big names all perform about the same. Some folks claim better MPG's after an intake and exhaust, some claim worse mileage. Some claim to feel the added performance, others swear that nothing happened.
I think for the most part, everyone agrees that an intake and exhasut will yeild better HP/TQ numbers (on a dyno) and will get overall better gas mileage, but you won't see both at the same time. If you want to get the performance out of your truck you will have to be in the gas pedal more which = poor gas mileage. If you want to see better mileage you will have to stay out of the gas, so the performance gains are rendered useless. And then there is the whole issue of contamination of your MAF and engine with dirt and oil (I don't consider this a big deterent, but some people are convinced it will spell the death of your engine!)

I will say that I have seen about a 2.5mpg increase since adding a K&N Series 77 CAI (got it on Ebay for $169 shipped) and Mobil One. I also have a Magnaflow full cat-back system FWIW. This is on a 4.6l Expy, but the basic principle still applies. IMO if you are gonna pay >$200 for just a muffler install, I would go ahead and pay the ~$400 for a full system and get some actual results.

i did the same thing you are considering and am overall happy with the results. i went with a knockoff Flowmaster (Flowsound) muffler with stock pipes. the sound is deeper but i hear drone in the cabin (i got what i paid for i think) so i'm now considering going with my first choice - IMCO.

i had made up my mind to get one of the IMCO mufflers originally while keeping my stock pipes but let the muffler guy talk me into their knockoff jobs. after i post this message i'm gonna try and find a larger IMCO muffler (this one i have now is very small) and just replace that thing i have on there now b/c i really don't care for the hot rod sound, lol.

IMCO is a very reputable company and their mufflers are very reasonably priced. i am yet to come across a person that has anything negative to say about this company.

anyways, if you're looking for an excellent muffler for less than half the price of the magnaflows and flowmasters check these guys out. you can get them on ebay or from many different online stores.

for more info check them out...
