[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Jul-02 AT 12:46 PM (EST)]The shift collar on my 75 F250 decided to die. Finally have that replaced but now I seem to have another problem(s). The steering shaft now has a lot of axial movement (over an inch I'd guess). My questions are:
1: What part in the steering column takes up the thrust (axial movement) of the steering shaft? Is it the rag joint or is there something else inside the column?
2: If it's something other than the rag joint, how in the heck do I get this column out? I must admit I'm also having quite a time getting the linkage loose from the arm just outside the cab (under the brake booster).
3: Anyone know where I can find an exploded view of this steering column? I have an old Chiltons manual but it's less than useless.
Sounds like it's going around. I'm right in the middle of the same problem on my 75 F250 HighBoy. Project got a little beyond my mechanical ability so I had it towed to my local Ford dealership. There were a couple of mechanics who used to work on these way back when. Anyway, they said I will have to replace the lower portion of the steering column. If I can find the part, they will put it in. I have not had time to start my search except for a few wrecking yards around work. Could be very hard to find.
