Hernia's?

I found out today the pain in my groin area for the last almost year is a hernia, and is going to require surgery. Anyone go through this? Recovery time, whats the surgery like, i looked online, but couldnt find much about the surgery.

I had triple hernia surgery back in May 1996. The doc accidently cut a muscle going to my right leg. Had to learn how to walk again. I had so many surgical staples in me the metal detectors went crazy every time I walked through one. Then in October 1996 a young girl ran a stop sign and t-boned me on the drivers side. That impact pushed me off the road head on into a utility pole which broke upon hitting it. Since I was wearing a seat belt I survived but the lap belt tore a lot of muscle in my groin and the shoulder belt messed up my left collar bone. Plus I got a broken tail bone and other assorted injuries. I'm still feeling the effects of that accident.

As far as the hernia surgery goes just don't even think about lifting any thing for several months. And I do mean anything.

What kind of hernia?

http://my.webmd.com/search/search_re...bmd_all_filter

I had an inguinal hernia 2 years ago. This is a very common type. The surgery was laproscopic. Surgery on Friday AM. Walking by noon. Laid around a couple of days. Back to the Doc 10 days later, released with no restrictions. I felt it one time since then, when lifting with a twisting motion. (which you're not supposed to do anyway....) They used mesh to tie it all together, and stapled that to my pelvis. Worked great.

If you have had previous repair or other abdominal surgery, or have another type of hernia, you may have more conventional surgery, with a longer recovery.

Dang Dusten, I'd see if you can have a 2 for the price of one surgery while you're at it and get the other one out of the way. Know what I mean?

I've had several friends who had hernias operated on. They all told me they were sore for a long time and simple stuff like coughing and poopin' reminded them of how fragile they still were. Tell Cass to take it easy on you next time.

Stroker_Deezel, Check out this site:

http://www.healthcentral.com/ency/408/000960.html

I had a Umbilical Hernia and was in and out of surgery in a matter of hours.

I was told not to lift anything for about a month.

Now I have an Incisional Hernia; great.

I had one done a few years ago. They've come a long way in the last 15 years. I spent a few days laying around and got back to work doing construction after a little more than a couple weeks. (They wanted me off for 6 weeks, but I pushed it. I could feel what my limit was.)

There's a procedure they do in the UK, where they insert a mesh, instead of the pull and stitch method, and that's suppose to only take a few days, but that's not approved here yet - as far as I know.

BTW... I had a Umbilical Hernia and after surgery it only hurt when I laughed, breathed or moved. Of course I'm too tough for pain medication. (Wasn't too bad, gave me a new respect for childbirth..)

Howdy, I think they use the screen patch method here in the states.

I think that's what I had on my first hernia op.

But I'm not 100% sure.

It's been several years.

Due for another hernia op.

It was my first time in a hospital and when I read the consent form it said I was agreeing to give them permission to discard any body parts. I dang near went back home. In at 8:00 and discharged by noon. It's a very minor operation. I understood that the doc cut the part off that stuck out and sewed up the hole instead of just stuffing it back in. I guess it matters how bad it is. I let mine go for years but I wish I'd of had it done sooner. They then stitch three layers of muscle individually then the skin. He didn't like to use the screen. I forget why. On the ride home I thought the Buick Park Ave. had square wheels. It hurt to breathe. I heal quick but it hurt for months. Everyone gets over it differently. Be prepared to see "everything" turn black & blue. A couple years later I was helping a guy move and I popped the other side but I'm not working anymore and it's not as bad yet so I'll just ignore that one too. You still have to be carefully lifting because you can rip it open again years after. I hope you are one of the guys that can go back to work in a week. Good luck.

Hernia on the left side when I was 13. Hernia on the right side at 14.

Hurt like #(*&#) ^***^(!)(@_#((OH MY))##@()!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It didn't help that after the first one, I went outside and was having a game of 'catch' with my neighbor. All was well, until he threw a 'wild shot' and hit me right in the incision.
When I woke up, I was in the emergency room. Blood everywhere! (Big dummy!!!)

The surgery isn't bad. As kabcpapc said, "As far as the hernia surgery goes just don't even think about lifting any thing for several months. And I do mean anything."
Have a friend lift for you.

I also had hernia surgery just over 4 years ago, a few months after my wife died. I have a 4" scar from the repair which consisted of a plug and mesh.
Whatever you do.....do NOT pick up any weight like was posted above. I did 5 days after my surgery and I am paying for it now. I had to pick my son up and put him in my truck(He was 3 at the time) because I had no help here at home.
Please do what the doctor tells you after the surgery.

First week it is tough to do anything except lay in a recliner. Grunting, coughing, clearing your throat, sneezing are excruciating. If you have a cough, postpone the operation. And take whatever you have to to make going to the bathroom as involuntary as possible, you arent going to want to forcing things for a week or 2.

I had conventional repair, mesh reinforced under general. Was at hospital for 4h or so.
I only took 1 percocet, that was just as I left the hospital, just gritted my teeth for a few days after that.

Lap repair is a much quicker recovery I hear, but my doctor said it was less reliable, and more risky due to possibly poking something with the scope or whatever.

I was ordered to do no lifting over a few pounds and no exercising for 6 weeks, he said let it heal right the first time and it wont cause any more problems. And it has not.

If you have a job that requires lifting, etc.. you will be off for 4 weeks minimum or on alternative duties anyway. I went beack to my desk job in 10 days.

I would strongly suggest checking out

http://www.shouldice.com/

The Shouldice method is well known. Friends of mine have had this surgery done at their Toronto, Ontario clinic, and swear by it. It's day surgery this way. Maybe they have clinics near you.
