high-beams acting weird

hey guys, i got a question... my 97 f-150 is being weird.. the high beams are not working, when i push the blinker switch forward to lock the lights in high-beam position, the low beams turn off.. now i havent checked the bulbs themselves, although i should.. any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

p.s. the fuses are fine, none of them appear to be blown/broken.

Welcome to FTE !!!

Have you tried pulling the handle back to see if the passing high beams work?

I would suspect the switch. You can check the bulbs, but it would be very unusual for both highbeam filaments to burn out at the same time.

Also check the plug and the wiring to the switch. They sometimes get overheated and melt.

all the wires look pretty decent, now for a guy who has not replaced one of these switches before, what do u think would be the best route to replace this switch?

It's not too easy. You have to pull the airbag, pull the steering wheel, and then you can get to the switch. Ford calls it a multi-function switch.

I don't have the procedure for the 97 trucks, and they are the new style, so maybe it's not that bad. Here's the procedure for later model explorers, and they didn't have to take the steering wheel off.
