Push button ignition

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum. I have always struggled through on my own, but I have alot of things to get done on my truck before I put it on a boat headed to France so I decided to consult the experts. Thankyou in advance for your help.

I have 1961 F100 Step 2wd with a not stock 351w edelbrock perf. intake and carb. My first question is this. I would like to make my ignition, push button and bought a push button just for that, but I am not sure which wire going into my ignition switch I should cut. Also I was told I could use 16 guage wire to connect the push button, but this seemed a little light. Can you all help?
Thanks, Jon

curiosity; why a push button ignition? your cutting wires, are you still planning on using the key switch? is it for some kind of security reason? sorry so many questions, just curious

Security is going to play a big part. I am going to eventually do away with the key which is currently a screw driver. I am thinking of a few toggle switches instead of the current switch. A feel a little silly about this, but when I bought a new switch with key I was never able to install it properly and have been using a screwdriver ever since(2 years.) Also I just like the idea of a push button.

The push button would need to be installed to constant hot and inline with the wire connected to the "s" terminal of the starter relay(on inner fender). The toggle switches would need to be wired to constant hot and then between the wires that are hot in "run" and one for the "accessory" position. So you would need one push button and two toggle switches to run the same functions as the one ignition switch. The 16 gauge wire would be fine since the push button is just activating the starter relay.
You will need either a wiring diagram if OE wire colors are present or a test light and make your own diagram. In any event it will take some patience and basic wiring knowledge to install.

Did this on one of my "race" cars, of course it looked right at home. If you basically take/look at the current switch, understand how the current flows through the course of turning the key, then wire in your switches/toggle or push button, it will work fine. Of course, then anyone who gets in your truck can push the buttons and start her up (no need for a key)...

Thanks for the info. I have the perfect spot to mount the push button, but I will have to find a spot to hide the toggles to keep it from looking silly and for security. The thieves in France are good at stealing old vehicles that are stock which is one of the reasons I was going this route. I might put a toggle on the electronic ignition wire as well. I will just have to make a checklist so I do not forget which position all the switches go. Would any of you happen to have a wiring diagram scanned for just the ignition switch? I do not have a good way of seeing which wires go to which posts on the switch although I guess I could just check resistance from each wire to each post, but if you all have a diagram it would save some frustration. Thanks again, Jon
P.s. Just think with the help you've given there will be some astonished children in France when she rumbles by.

Motorhaven sells the wiring diagrams for your truck, check the PARTS link on the home page, top right I think.
