cooling problem

i ran cleaner though my f150 toclean the cooling system. It said to drive the truck for 8 hours with the cleaner and water in the system. I ran it longer than that and it started to overheat on me while sitting in traffic. When i checked the resivior it was bone dry. It has did this one other time with antifreeze in it this summer, but i only drive the truck on the weekends, could this be a head gasket craked block or what else could be the problem and is there anyway of troubleshooting this myself?

Autozone will loan you a cooling system pressure gauge. Just remove the rad cap, replace it with the pressure gauge and see if it holds pressure.

When you let it idle wth the cap off after adding the cleaner, was it belching coolant?

no, i filled it completely up and then let it warm up, while it was warming it spit some out the top, then the thermostat opened and it sucked it all in and i added more till it was full

Not sure, but I dont think it should spit coolant at any time.

I'd put the gauge on it & go from there.

Have you checked the seams where the plastic end tanks are crimped onto the radiator core. seems a lot of Ford radiators leak in that area.

One other possibility is a weak radiator cap that isnt holding pressure. You can check that with the pressure gauge also.

have you noticed any white smoke out your exhuast?
change your thermostat? check hoses for any bends on them.
