Saw an 88 5.0 for sale. Since I am always on the lookout for these, I decided to check it out (they are hard to find around here for sale). Salesman tells me that is has 211,000 KM on it, and it needs front brakes, cat converts (province it came from doesn't require them apparantly) and that it has a small oil leak from distruibuter. I opened the hood, and my hands got covered with oil, just from doing that. Checked out the engine, there was oil around the distributer, just like he said. But the engine looked fairly clean (too clean for this part of the world). One thing I noticed, is that the lower intake was painted blue, is that factory? I don't think it is, as I never noticed it before. I thought that they were gray for the 5.0L.
Oh yes, all along the insides of the fenders, the wiring, etc, was covered with blue paint, a real great job painting it there folks!
Want the kicker? I asked how much on the road, he said with the brakes and seal fixed, $5600!!! No thanks, I got screwed enough at tax time!!!
lallen, Hi tell him I just bought a 89 LX with 100900 miles for $225 has a four banger in it but I could put a strong 5.0 in for less than that there are G/ts here in new jersey for $3500 to $5500 in the 88-93 range with just about 100,000 miles keep looking theyre out there. John
Not sure if you guys noticed, but I am talking in Canadian$. I have seen a lot of these, but never looked at one with 120,000 miles on it. Looked at a red 85 GT a year ago, with 70,000 miles, for $4500. Shoulda got it.
I should add that I do have an 85 LX. Bought it for $100. It had a 3.8 (seized). Body outside and under is in perfect shape, no rust, dents, except for hatch, and lower pass side door. I took everything off of it, and out of it! Planning on redoing the paint, changing suspension, brakes, rearend, etc, into a Saleen replica. I am going to stuff a 5.8 windsor in there with a T56 tranny as well. Haven't decided if I want to go with EFI or a carb yet. Any ideas? My goal for this is to run mid - high 12's, in a reliable car that I can drive to the drags, the autocross course, and still be able to idle around town. I also want to keep all the rice burners with their fart mufflers away from me as well!
I would like to get an 89 or above 5.0 (89 as I belive that was first year for Mass air on non California cars) just to drive around for now. Oh, and it would also replace the girlfriends 87 Si prelude. We both hate that car with a passion, but it is cheap on gas. Prices for parts are insane though.
