Voltage Regulator
Is there a year voltage regulator that is electronic and not the old style that fits the old style plug?
What year did they first start using electronic regulator and will it fit the old style plug?

Getting ready to replace mine and was wondering if it would be better to go with the newer style.
Yes, there are later, solid state regulators that have the same plug. At my local O'Reileys they have three versions, beleive it or not. You can actually get the mechanical version, but its like $40. Then there is the cheapo chinese solid state for $13 and then the american made Borg-Warner solid state one for $25.
I decided to go with the more expensive, american made one for $25. This was after my battery cooked over and I decided it might have been the regulator that stuck. Believe it or not, the regulator was the original!!!
Interestingly, the new "solid state" regulator flickers the ALT light at low rpm, just like the old mechanical one did.
I put in a gel battery too -- after I had taken apart my whole front right clip and doused it with baking powder to neutralize the battery acid.
I concur with Dave, and will add the Motorcraft version through an independent jobber is about the same $$ as the BW one he mentioned. Bottom line is, the system will all last longer with the electronic V-Reg.
Mine flickers @ Idle in our Aerostar 4.0, but my Slick has a 100amp style FoMoCo Alt & a Motorcraft V-Reg & it does not flicker. It's the same V-Reg I ran with the 55A Alt I R&R'd with the 100A I've got now. 100A may seem overkill but I run an 850 CCA Batt with a 770A reserve @ -32 which I seldom see here.

That is what I am doing this weekend.
Ever since installing the new style head lights the amp gauge flickers all the time. I also read somewhere here to add some horn relays to those new style headlights to get better voltage/current to them and save the old wire from over heating.
Thanks again guys.
