I have a 2001 f150 ext.cab 4x4 with the 5.4. When i start it up when its cold only i will get a puff of blue smoke out of the tail pipe. This is the only time i have any smoke. I checked my oil at the last change and it was pretty low. I dont want to continue having this any suggestions out there.
No mechanic here but I always thought that if an engine blows blue smoke only on start-up.....oil is leaking past the valve stem seals.
Maybe someone with more knowledge will reply soon.
Yes it sounds like the valve stem guides are leaking, it may seem like it is not leaking but it still may be leaking, you just notice it when it's cold because it has time to accumalte in the cylinders.
my truck does the same thing but it will do it in any weather. When mine sits for longer than overnight it will do it when you start it up....a puff of white smoke-maybe blue mixed in with it but mainly white. I asked a friend who was a mechanic and he said it is probably the valve stem seal letting oil in . He said I should not worry about it unless it gerts worse. I have a 2000 F-150 4x2 4.6 with 77,000 mi.
I agree that the blue/gray smoke is a leaky valve stem seal. Some you can change without removing the cylinder head - not sure on a 5.4 since I do not have one.
The white smoke on start up is a whole different matter. White is usually water/coolant in the combustion chamber. I would suspect a head gasket on that one.
I'd recommend changing oil & filter with good high mileage oil, motorcraft oil filter, a quart of lucas oil additive and put a pack of bars leak coolant pellets in the coolant. That usually helps a bunch. Some people are anti-additive - but if its internal engine problems you don't have much to lose. I've seen it do the trick many times.
do you think it would be a vacuum leak in the hose, because when i changed the pcv valve my truck would barely idle it would drop below 500 rpms. it ran normal when i was on the gas but then when i would let off the idle would drop right off.
If the pcv valve is not operating normaly the truck will run bad and possibly cause the white smoke. When you chnaged it to anew one and it ran worst then that tells me there is something wrong somewhere. the main purpose of the pcv valve is to allow pressure in the engine to return to the intake and be burned up. There could be a crack in the hose or a clogg somethere. It may be time to remove the throttle body and check all the ports and clen them. It would be easierif I was there to help this long distance stuff sucks. anoter solution is they sold you a deffective new PCV valve. it does happen. I would check all hoses for leaks. take a can of carb cleaner and spry around all vaccum hoses and te intake system if the idles changes then that is the area you need to look for issues. hope this helps. Also check the IAC, although you should get a code for this sensor.
passenger side of the motor right on top of the valve cover mid way. the hose goes around to the back of the intake check to ensure it is not clogged or has a hole in it. very easy since it works off of vaccum put your finger on the hose while the truck is running and it should suck it up and stop pulling air if not then there is a problem.
well guys this is whatI cam up with I took off the pcv hose and there are no cracks anywhere and it wasnt clogged. So I put a new pcv valve in and when i pull it out of the valve cover when its running the truck still runs when i put the old one back in and tried it the truck shuts of in like 5 seconds. what do you guys think. The faster the reply the better. Thanks in advance.
