Rough Idle/Nuetral Engine Surge

1999 F-350 7.3L Banks Stinger + Enhancement Chip
After running for sometime my truck will begin to idle very roughly. When I notice this I usually put it into Nuetral to keep it from dieing. When in nuetral the RPMs race up to about 2000 (1-2 seconds) and then back down to @750 rough idle and then back up to @2000 (no power at all) and then it will die. After that I cannot start the vehicle for a long time. The vehicle begins to surge and make an awful noise from the engine area. I was stranded the last time it did it with my trailer (22 foot toybox 9,000lbs). I have a Banks Stinger Plus set up in it also. I have taken the chip out of the vehicle and replaced the Cam Position Sensor. The vehicle did it to me again with a new sensor and the chip out!! Any Ideas????

Have it scanned for codes. There are a few sensors/switches that might make that happen.

With the absence of codes......it can get expensive quick.

1. Cheapest check first........make sure the TPS sensor isn't loose at the gas peddle.

2. Check connection and or replace ICP sensor.

3. It at times doesn't flag a code ( it would be nice if it did )........but the CPS would also be a fair candidate.

That's where I'd start.

I took it to another mechanic who scanned for codes. We got 1210 and 1211. We check the ICP (oil pressure.. I beleive) and it was corroded on the inside. We cleaned the corrosion out and plug it back together. Would that creat the rough idle and RPM surge??? I'm taking the Banks chip into them today to test it to verify it is working properly. Any more ideas?

Thanks - Aaron

Yes, if the ICP wasn't sending a constant signal.......it would be telling the PCM that the injector oil pressure was all over the place......and the PCM would be trying to correct it. It's like when you put a 10k MOD on the ICP. The engine runs rough because the PCM thinks the pressure is 200 PSI low, and tries to correct it by bumping the pressure by 200 PSI. That's how we pull a better response out of the throttle.

Would the ICP being corroded and not giving proper signal cause the motor to "rev" up by itself while in Nuetral?

When I've had the 10k MOD switched in.......I have experienced this once at a stop sign. I havn't determined if that was the problem....but I don't leave it switched in all the time these days.

No it didn't. It only surged, and I turned off the MOD. I don't like using it in town, because of how sensative the peddle is.
