Thumbs up 460 head pull...... (56k need not apply)

So as some of you may know, I have a F-250 with a 460 that I am overhauling for my winter beater. Leaks oil internally and it has over 140K on it. This is my first head pull and it has been a learning experience.

For those mechanics out there, can you take a look at the vavle and cylinder pics and tell me what you think? White valve mean it's running too hot, but there may be more issues that aren't as obvious to me.

I will be taking the heads to Head Werks in Bloomington when I get the chance. Anywho, on with the pics:

TB and Plenum:

With the inkake mani off we can see the cold side of the head....more oil buildup.... :

Voila! No more bolts! Head is out now:

Now the issues start to really surface...valves:

Block and cylinders:

So at the end of the day, most of the engine is taken down, TB is out, intake manifold is out, and one head is out. Not a bad piece of work.

Hmm, preview looked ok before. Sorry I guess. I posted a similar thread on another forums for my car. I'll try and upload them here too.

There, that should work. I'm thinking that there was a leak in my head gasket because when I was taking out one of the head studs it was really difficult to get out and it was partially rusted plus stripped. It also reeked like coolant. I haven't had the chance to do a really clost inspection of the block to see if there are any cracks yet....but I hope not.

Looks like it is running a bit lean. EFIs are noted for this as they try for better mpg numbers. Without a knock sensor they can destroy themselves.

Bump...

I was talking with someone and they said that seeing valves like that may not be unusual for trucks with 140k miles on it. He said he'd almost would expect to see it.

Does anyone have any ideas on the blow by? Should there be that much?!

Update on the project. I have the intake, plenum, and TB either ported, polished or both. Take a look and tell me what you think.

intake before:

And intake after:

Knocked down the steps in the TB and blended them a bit:

intake before spit shine:

and after:

Starting this friday I will tackle the heads. Hopefully I will get at least one full head done. We'll see. I don't plan on too much material removal, just a port/gasket match and a polish. I'll post up again after I get at least one done.

Nope. Die grinder, my dremel and some stone grinding bits did the work to clean it up. I know bead blasting is similar to sandblasting, but why would that be bad anyway?

Because you will NEVER get all of the blast media out of the casting. It will then get sucked into your engine, which is essentially like putting sand in your intake with the engine running.

So your porting the heads does this mean your gonna step up the cam and will the computer handle that? I've never seen much on pumping up the horses on one of the fuel injected 460's. Being that it's a winter beater you want it dependable so you don't get stuck out in the snow cause I know you wanna go play in the snow Let us know how it runs once you get it all back together and installed. Really curious on how the porting affects the computers attitude.

Yes I am porting the heads as well. I plan to do a mild port only to match, not a full race port or anything like that. The stock ECU should handle this fine as I'm not getting to crazy with the portwork. I'm not doing any cam work this time around. Maybe if this car finds it's way into another vehicle I would.....

Are you going to run headers, a higher flowing intake, different exhaust or anything like that? If so, your stock EEC-IV speed density might 'handle' it, but it more than likely it will not run the best and you'll be running under a continual lean condition. There are several ways to remeady this, I can go into more detail if need be.

I personally am working on a similar build up of an EFI 460:
-'88 460 short block (w/ modified oil pump to eliminate 'collapsing lifter' problem)
-F3TE heads, ported/polished/bowl blended/deck milled/port matched, lots of other goodies
-Doug thorley Tri-y headers
-Dual 3" high flow cats
-Banks ram air intake lid on modified stock intake tract, full insulated
-Accel 32lb injectors
-BBK fuel pressure reg.
-Tuning via Tweecer R/T
-lots of other small misc. stuff

So, there are a few people building EFI 460's out there, but we are few and far between.

I have some pics of my ported heads (F3TE's) if you want any ideas on what needs to be removed, and where the areas of best improvement are.
