'93 Tune Up

Did a tune up on my sons Explorer this weekend. Pretty straight forward job on these rigs. The left rear sparkplug is easy enough to get to through the wheel well. I don't enderstand why they make the MAF screws secure though. They are just a standard Torx screw, but it had a little bead of metal in the hole to pervent the wrench from getting in there. I took a small ball rasp and my dremel to flatten that out and the wrench went right in. Removed them with no problems after that. Not sure how long the plugs had been in there, but they were in pretty bad shape. Funny how I could not find what the plug gap was supposed to be. The old ones were anywhere from .045 to .080. I have a service CD and could not find the spec anywhere (they need a better search engine), ended up calling O'Riellys. One thing to rememebr is that the fuel system is pressurized when taking off the fuel filter

Good job John - you even read up enouph to clean the MAF sensor. Check this web for other good info. http://draco.acs.uci.edu/explorer/

And yes, Ford thought it was a good idea to put check valves in the fuel system to keep it pressurized the next time you want to start the motor in a hurry.

You should also do the O2's and always disconnect the battery for 5-10 minutes to clear the old, bad learned correction factors. You'll then start clean and let the PCM relearn the out of spec factors for a good running engine again.

The spark gap should be indicated on the smog device info under the hood, unless it's no longer there.

Mmmm... Those O2's are pricey little devils, probably not a bad idea as I have no idea how long they have been there. I'm going to put new plug wires on this weekend and then perhaps going to autozone and see if it is throwing any codes.

I thought the plug gap would be somewhere on a sticker too. Must have peeled off though. It might have been on the plastic plate thing I've seen on Explorers which is missing on this one.

When I got my plugs last at Autozone, they told me the gap. of course I double checked the sticker under the hood when I got home. They were actually right. .052" sticks in my mind.

I agree with the wires, but wouldn't touch the O2s unless it throws a code or it's running badly. Make sure you clear the codes and drive it for a while before you take it to Autozone to have them read.

To clear the codes, all you have to do is unhook the battery for 10 minutes?

On my '91 it says .052-.056. I always set them at the tighter gap so when I go to change them again a hundred thousand miles from now they will be not too far beyond the wider setting
