hi all,
just rewired my 67 f-100 with a painless kit. I have evey thing working now except for the fuel gauge. The problem is that it is pegged out to full. I tried swapping the wires on the back of the gauge and it is still the same. Checked the ground and it's good, the gauge was working fine before I rewired it.
Thanks
I've had mine apart before... just be very careful un'snapping' the case. Look inside.
Theres a variable resistance coil in there. You'll see how it works. If the coiled wire is broken, you may have to get a new (from a parts yard) sender.
My truck sat for a few long years while I was in the service and I had some corrosion in the gas tank. My sender was hit and miss until I cleaned it up. Don't ya love running out of gas when the gauge says 'Half-tank!'?
I've cleaned my coil very carefully with a soft pencil-type eraser. Knocked the crud off and CAREFULLY snapped it back together. I had to chase down a new float too. The old one had holes. Good luck let me know how it goes.
YUP...you need to get the voltage regulator back in the circuit. Most guages only need like 9 volts to read correct. With full 12volts...it will peg with no problem.
I have a similar question, not to hi-jack the thread. When I fill up, it only goes to just under 1/2 full. It stays there until I hit 1/4 tank, then works normally. I'm thinking the float. I also have an after-market temp guage, so my original guage is disconnected. The other guages work properly. I'd like all the guages to read properly and reconnect my temp guage, and omit the after-market one (I have to turn on the overhead light at night to check temp, it's under-dash). I'm wondering if the after-market temp guage has a different kind of sending unit than the OEM one, and does it have some kind of different connection?
thanks for the replies everyone. well it's not the sender, checked it with a multimeter and it seems pretty accurate with the ohms. where is the regulator supposed to be located, would it be somewhere in the old harness that is at the dumps now?
Usually aftermarket temp guages need their own sending unit. By chance it might be the same, but the resistance must be the same to make it read right.
As for fuel, I'd say the arm might be caught on something? I'd pull it out, and see if it swings full arc. Hook it up, move it and see if it works(probably need to ground it to make it work though). If it moves full arc, but only reads 1/2 tank, then I'd say the wound resistor is bad and that means you need to replace sending unit.
I have one in my one Galaxie that has it's fits sometimes, but it's so old and rusty that it doesn't make contact sometimes and just have not replaced it yet.
