I've got a 78 F250 with a 300 in it and it has a paper air filter. It has a tube coming up from the heat box and it connects to the bottom of the air intake part on the filter housing. There is a little door inside that is supposed to open when the thermostat gets 105 degrees. The thermostat looks to be made of brass. Does anyone know how to get the thermostat to work or where I can get a new thermostat?
I have a 79 with a 351m. It has a vacuum baffle mechanism that I was able to find at NAPA. You may have something different though. Good luck in your search.
I'm aware of 2 basic systems. 1. the door is actuated by a vacuum motor mounted on top of the air snorkel. The hose that goes to the vacuum motor goes to a thermostatic valve inside the air cleaner assembley.
2. A thermostatic wax element. This has a wax plug that expands with heat and moves the air door. I am not aware of any way to service these and haven't seen new parts for them. They either work or you look for another used one.
