my truck idles fine in neutral or park, but will stall out if I put it in drive, I am sure that the idle is too low but I don't know how to adjust it without raising the idle in neutral. Any ideas? 1979 f150 351m 2bbl stock.
Which carb adjustment are you speaking of? I can there is a screw on the back of the carb on the drivers side that I can adjust but to get 600rpm in drive I have about 1500rpm in neutral. I think I should be looking for something that raises the idle while in gear but that lowers it in neutral.
Doesn't exist. Sounds like you have some other problem. Check for a vacuum leak. Also check the idle mixture screws. There should be a screw on the body of the carb that controls this.
get a can of wd40 or something like it, spray around the base of the carb and around all the vac lines on the intake. if the idle picks up you have found your vac leak. check your timing also. how is your brake booster? do you here air when you hold the brakes? if the booster is leaking, that is a big vac leak. adjustment screws are on the front of the carb base under the bowl.
Brake booster is new, and I will check all the adjustable screws I can find. I think that I will go get about 20 ft of vacuum hose tomorrow and replace all the hoses and connectors (one at a time) for good measure. Thanks for the responses.
unhook your throttle cable, see if you can move the arm up and down or front to back. if you can , the baseplate is worn and will drive you crazy. a good carb shop can drill and bush the plate to tighten it up.
