I have a 77' f-150 that a 460 has been swappd into. It has a carter AFB 4 barrel on it now. It needs replaced.
I want a good performance carb. Seems like most people tend to say 750 holley or Edelbrock. I just want some good power. Mileage doesn't matter as long as I'm getting atleast 5 or 6
A 750 Edelbrock will do just fine. Start with both idle mixture screws at 2 turns out. Hook a manifold pressure gauge to the bottom right port on the carb. Now with the engine warmed up and no choke activated, turn both screws in 1/4 turn at a time until you get the highest manifold pressure(should be 18-20) Adjust the idle speed if it gets more than 30 rpm too high for what it should be. Each time you make an adjustment give the engine a minute or so to react. Once you get the highest manifold pressure dont go any further. Usually this means you go a 1/4 turn to far and dont see any improvement on the gauge and you go back a 1/4. This has always worked for me.
and edelbrock 750 is the same thing as a carter. exactly the same thing infact you can even use the same rebuild kits.
if your going to run this engine above 5000 rpm a lot then you need the 750, but if your not going to see it above 5000 rpm much a 600 or 650 is actually plenty of carb on a 460 cid engine that is stock or basically so.
The instructions that come with the kits are pretty good, if you have some basic mechanical skills. Mainly you want to pay close attention to how the carb comes apart and get it back together right (some guys use a camera to take pics, a digital camera is real good for this stuff). Double check the float setting.
