The axle u-joints are shot on my truck. we got as far as taking the hub cover off, the spring and the snap ring that holds the inner gear on the splines inside the hub. That gear will not come out. Like I said, the snap ring is out and nothing else is holding it in there.
Shouldnt it slide out no problem? I think the splines are boogered because it will slide to the ring slot and stop. What gives, is a special tool that will get it out or am I screwed.
I had the same problem on my 79 4wd.I ended up having to take a big chisel and bust the hub off.I tryed to break the gear so i could just replace the lockout but it wasnt happening.Appearently the splines were messed up on my outer stub and it wouldnt slide off.I hope you have better luck then me but if not locate the parts to replace what you will break before you break it.reccomend replacing the outer stub to.
Did you remove both rings? There's the snap ring on the end of the axle shaft then there is an internal snap ring that goes on the outside of hub to hold the guts in. here's a pic of what I am describing. I highlighted the piece I am talking about and where it goes in the hub. This snap ring can be hard to see if there is any grease in there. I've forgotten about in a couple times myself. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/sizeimage.php?&photoid=6861&.jpg
when you remove the locking hubs held in by the allen screws in side right at the outer edge of the hub is a grove that runs all the way around inside the hub. the ring has a gap in it so you can pop it out with a flat edge or an instrament like a ice pick works. it holds all the guts in like the outer gear and the inner gear that your talking about. like stated before if really greasy it will be hard to find. like your g/f told ya your finger never fails use it to find the gap and pry it out. just my two cents as many spindles as i have replaced i have become quite good at this lol
