well, snow is coming, and i think i should stop procrastinating and get this done. when i bought the truck, it would not switch into 4wd. it has ESOF. i tried to turn the hubs from free to auto, but they would not move. i used pliers to get some leverage and ended up flexing the plastic rib and stopped because i didnt want to break it. 2002 with 71000 hiway miles. i do not know anything about the previous owner, but i bet he never used 4wd before because the hubs DO NOT move from free. could you please help me on what i need to do to get these working. i felt so embarrassed the other day when i couldnt back up a gravel driveway thanks!
I've also known of guys who just liberally "washed" everything down with WD-40 (or similar) and restored the ability to turn the selector.
My old 4WD Excursion would get the hubs crusted up and make it hard to turn. I made sure that I rotated them at least once a week.
Also...your hubs should lock even when in the "FREE" position. (Some say AUTO / LOCK) If you don't have 4WD when the interior ESOF switch is selected, then you have vacuum problems or hub issues deeper than the lack of selector switch movement. But given the stable of late model Ford trucks you have, you probably already knew that.
Just pull the hub and clean it out and apply a "light" coat of grease to the parts. Pull the wheels off and there is a ring or big C-clip that holds the hub on. Clean it up and re-install.
