Diff between 6.0 & 7.3 ??

Howdy,

I'm thinking of buying a F250 PSD and wanted to learn what the advantages and dissadvantages of the 6.0 compared to the last gen of 7.3's so I can decide just what to look for.
Why did Ford change?

Thanks

Jerry

The 7.3L could not meet new EPA regulations. For more info on the 6.0L read up here.

Advantages:

Doesn't need any additional power mods.
tow / haul in tranny
integrated break controller
better cooling for tranny
thighter turning radius w/ the coil spring fronts in the 05/06s

Disadvantages:

EPA stuff not well designed
some of em leak oil
weak head design

I like mine & wouldn't go back to a 7.3. Just too loud, and they need the mods to get the power out of em. A 6.0 under load will hold a hill w/out breathin hard, right fromthe dealer

This is a 6.0 Forum and most here (not all) will recommend the 6.0 over the 7.3... Plus the 6.0 is more fun to drive- If you were seriously looking to get a 7.3, IMO get the manual tranny, especially if you plan to tow a heavy load. If you are getting a 6.0, the auto tranny is great! JMO

With all due respect I came from a 7.3L and 6.0L hands down is one awesome engine. A good ole reliable is a 7.3L at times, just keep a few extra parts in the glove box like CPS sensor.....and like utahtom said, manual trans, but even then the clutches are not that good for the 7.3.....just my opinion though.

Ive drivnen both, but i will admit i have spent most of my time in my Six OOOOO.
But driving them, i can think the only similarity is the fact that they are both diesels, although i have heard some on here and other places that since the 6.0 likes to spin its not a "real diesel"..........whatever that means haha.

But i will say, except for the recalls (which i will admit tick me off but at least ford is taking care of problems), i have been trouble free with both of mine ( both 04s, 1 E-350 with a utility box DRW and 1 F-350 LWB CC DRW 4X4).

And do yourself a favor, ford says 7500 on oil changes, i know other people stretch them out even longer (although they do a lot of research in order to make sure their oil last a long time). But unless u drive a serious amount of miles per year........just change at 5000......im using synthetic and i still change at 5 grand, its cheap insurance, at least in my mind. And yes, i know the oil changes are expensive even for the DIYs, but hey, i wish i could change my blood out every nite i have a few to many drinks

AS many have said there are, few things the same, the 6.0 will out run the 7.3 empty but that is the only thing it has in its favor. DOESNT have the low end grunt of a 7.3 or the dependablity,or the mpgs either the 6.0 that I own is no where close to my two 7.3 in any way, I believe this is why ford is discontinuing the 6.0,it just has to many sensors and others problems for me,still love the ford truck just not the 6.0 good luck or your new truck whatever you get.

I had a 97 F250 7.3 and now have 05 F350 6.0. The 6.0 has so much more power. All around she is a much nicer truck. Towing my horse trailer is much nicer with the 6.0. The 7.3 towed the same trailer just fine but the 6.0 seems to tow with much more ease. On a good day the 7.3 would get 15.5 mpg overall. The 6.0 gets 17.2mpg overall. These are just my obsevations with owning the 7.3 and the 6.0.

Thanks for the info guys.

After reading up some it's sounds like the 2003 6.0 tended to have more problems than it should have. Is there a time period or manufactuer date where Ford has cleared the dependability/ power/mpg problems.
It sounds like the 2000 to 2003 are pretty good except the CPS (which isn't that big a deal). What year model should I start looking for in the 6.0.

Thanks

Jerry
