my 1997 expedition electrical problems

My speedometer has stopped working taking the transmission control with it . it used to only happen when i turned the light on or the ac or somtimes when i used the directionals. just left the dealer ship yesterday to the tune of abuot 450$.the intalled a sensor. but still couldnt find the problem. when i say tras. control i mean high rpm shifting. or not shifting at all.

Is that how it works now? They mess around for awhile, change a sensor that probably costs $40.00 and give it back to you not fixed with a $400.00 labor charge?

The next suggestion would be there is something wrong with the speedo unit, since this takes the signal from the sensor, and distributes it to the abs, engine computer(for the tranny) and the cruise control.

Is the abs light on and does the cruise control work?

Searched local junk yards not to many dead expo or 150s there.anybody ever have a problem similar to this. The truck runs great all day but when night comes, and the lights come on,I loose the speedometer and smooth shifting. Sometimes I can play with the light switch on and off and can get it to stay on. But if I use the directionals it happens again.Bad ground somewhere ,Im thinking???.

That's a good possibility. You might want to try the old "take it apart and put it back together" trick. If there is a loose connection somewhere, this might find it.

The dealership should have the diagnostic equipment to communicate with the speedo/engine computer/trans network. Sorry, this is the way the new vehicles are, and I am not up on special networking stuff on the vehicles.

I would talk to the dealership first though, and lay down some ground rules. Can you demonstrate the problem with the lights on during the day? If the problem can be re-created at will, I would talk to them about what's going to be their first move, and how are they going to troubleshoot. If they do not have the equipment to talk to the speedo unit, and are just going to be guessing, while you pay for their time, find another dealer who knows what they are doing.

There should be a normal amount of time involved in troubleshooting this problem, and fixing it. It's ok if they are new to this stuff, and need a little hands on training to get familiar with troublshooting this system, but you should not have to pay for their technicians training time.
