I bought a 99 f150 5.4 L in April this year after about 3 months I seen a big cloud of smoke when I started it one day.I checked the oil on it and it was a quart low, about 300 miles after an oil change. I watched the oil level and watched for smoke when I started it. It smoked 1 or 2 times when I started it but not all the time but still went through oil at about the same rate.Has anyone else ever have this problem before. There is a lot more to the story just thought I would start here for now.
So it sounds like nobody has had this problem I take it. Can anyone tell me what Ford considers to be high oil consumption? I was told if it uses a quart in 600 miles ford don't think that's a problem.
My truck uses about 1 to 1.5 quarts between 3,000 mile oil changes. I am not really sure what Ford considers high useage but I know it has to be more than what I would put up with, somewhere around 2 quarts per 1000 miles or something like that. How many miles are on the truck? Sounds like oil may be leaking past your valve guides. Why dont you call a dealership and speak to the service dept. they will be able to tell you what Ford considers normal. Sorry I couldnt help more.
It has about 93,000 on it. I did talk to the dealer on it and one said it was around the 600 miles per quart and one said around 1500 per quart. The dealer's own people can't come up with a sound number for me to go from.
The first time this started I sent it back to the dealer and they told me the valve guids were worn and valve seals needed to be replaced. They fixed it (or so they say)then it all started again???? I'm glad they are paying for all this and not me.
Replace your PCV valve, mine was stuck open and I burned about as much oil as you. Once I changed the valve oil consumption returned to almost 0 per 3000 miles
Ford considers 900 miles to the quart "normal" . Change your PCV valve as jgh said. It's cheap and easy to do. Just make sure you spend the few extra bucks and get a Motorcraft brand PCV. They seem to work the best. Too many aftermarket brands just don't seem to work as well or at all. Sometimes my 2002 4.6 with only 25,000 miles on it will smoke on restart if I previously just moved it a short distance, such as jocking in the driveway within 30 minutes.
You also have to consider what kind of miles that were driven for those 93,000. hard driving will decrease the life of the engine, was the oil changed at the right intervals? if not that would have a huge impact on the life of the engine. I agree with a quart every 1500 to 2000.
