Flathead "chokes" when ya step on it

Hi All
Is this a Timing issue or a carb issue. Stock 239 and 2bbl. Idles fine, give her some gas and she'll choke in it and you have to back off.
Ideas?

Carb, clogged fuel line, dirty tank or timing.

What do you mean by "chokes in it"? Too much gas? If so, I'd say bad power valve. If it's starved, could also be a bad fuel pump. 4TL8's list about covers the rest.

Cleaned out tank, all new gas lines, new fuel pump. Idles fine step on it hard and it'll stall, with the smell O' gas.

hey Reamer.. My 223 did that.. It was the high speed side of the carb that was bad.. ended up replaceing the carb and it ran great afterwords.. Comes to find out the carb it self had varni9shed to the point that even with boiling it out for a week in a hot tank wouldnt help it..
