Hello to everybody. I have a question about my '78 F 150 460 Super Cab auto with factory air. The motor, tranny, rear have been redone...as has the air conditioning system...the radiator and water pump are also new...runs fine out on the road...but starts to overheat (according to the guage in the dash) sitting in traffic for only a short time...the fan shrould was not put back on as it was damaged but I now have a new one and will install it this weekend (can I install it by just taking the upper radiator hose off and perhaps taking the fan off as well). I also am running Royal Purple Ice in the cooling system but that does not seem to affect the overheating problem at this point anyhow. There was a tranny cooler on the truck originally but the previous owner did not put it back on...perhaps I should install one to help with the overheating condition...I also need to install a real set of guages to monitor the exact temps when driving...I am told the temp for this engine should be in the 208-210 range...correct?
Thanks for any information about this situation. I do appreciate it.
Put the fan shroud back on first and see how your truck performs. That shroud is vital to proper low speed cooling. This will probably fix the overheating problems. Also make sure that you are running with a thermostat installed.
As for the transmission cooler, if the truck came with one originally I'd make sure to put one back in. In any case there is probably a transmission cooler in the radiator's outlet tank and it needs to be connected up properly.
An aftermarket transmission cooler would not help cure an engine overheating condition, but it will keep the transmission cooler.
Thanks ever so much...I installed the shroud this morning...and will see what happens next time I drive to Austin (Texas) and get stuck in traffic. The previous owner put a new 160 degree thermostat in so I should be ok there.
As far as I can tell, the radiator tranny cooler is plumbed properly...but since the truck came with a transmission cooler (according to the previous owner), I will probably put one back in thinking every little bit helps with any overheating condision.
Thanks again for the help.

Is your fan clutch working? if it is not, you will over heat when stuck in traffic or when you come off the freeway and come to your first stop light you will over heat big time if the fan clutch is not working.
