New Guy with an easy question

I was a Chevy guy all my life until I went Diesel Truck shoping. I drove home last weekend with a loaded 2006 F250 PowerStoke.

My question is what kind of oil should I run in it? Synthetic or Regular?
I am planning on doing my first change at 1500 miles and have heard conflicting opinions from my friends.<O</O

Congrats on the new rig- Looks great! Blue & Arizona Beige-Nice combo
Oil is a very touchy subject... Although a lot of folks agree that with a diesel engine, run conventional/regular oil until about 10,000 miles and then switch to synthetic (if you choose).

I recommend at least 5k miles before you change oil. This allows the engine to wear properly before the switch. After that change to whatever synthetic you choose to use.

I use Mobil-1 and since I use the OilGuard by-pass filter system I refill to 15 qts. I buy 3-5qt containers of Mobil-1 from Wally World and the pricing ends up being close between Mobil-1 and Rotella plus the filter.

My reply to a tee, except change oil at the earlier mileage. OilGuard is an extra ounce of protection, and don't forget the fumoto valve, and Lisle 36mm filter socket.

If you've got the money, use synthetic. I don't. I use Delo 400 CI-4+, about $6.50/g at Costco. I've done Oil Analysis every change, cause I have the C-94 injectors & want to keep an eye on them, and everything looks good for 7,500 miles. It does shear a bit, but I'm not uncormfortable w/ that.

The only way I could make synthetic cost out for me is to use by-pass filtration & extend changes to 30k.

Your gonna like this one.

I use "John Deere Plus-50" 15w-40 and Deere has a synthetic....Plus 50 0w-40.....pure 100% synthetic. I also have used Rotella with no problems. I can get the oil from Deere in 30gal drums, 5 gal buckets, 2.5 gal container or quarts.

Watch the synthetic blends.....use dino or synthetic...just my opinion.

HeavyAssault-

Be sure to note that you use Mobil 1 Truck & SUV (I'm assuming that's correct... if not, you should be!) Regular Mobil 1 oil is *not* certified for diesel engines (API CI-4), where Mobil 1 Truck & SUV as well as Mobil Delvac 1 are.

I did not mention that fact, I do use the 5w-40 TRUCK & SUV version.

I will recommend that whatever oil is used in these trucks you are smart to check the API rating that is found on the bottle.

I see this Deere oil meets CI-4 Plus. Cool. What do you pay for this? I also see it comes in a 220 gallon size. Good for oil-change parties with your buddies

To the question: Keep with dyno for the first 5-10K for ring seat. Then switch to syn if you want. I sampled/tested at about 3K and had enough fuel to change. I didn't make it to 5K intervals until about 15K miles. I had enough fuel by 3K to change until then. Sampled every time. I think 1500 is overkill for the first change, but 5K is too long on the next several changes.

To keep with your question: I use Dino and change the oil. Synthetics are great, I just do not see it for the 6.0L with the EGR recycling system. I'm sure others have a different point of view. Kind of like peeing in the pool with recycling exhaust gasses back into the system.

As far as costs, depends on your JD dealer, but volume is far cheaper if you can buy this amount. The 0-40 Syn would be great for winter, extreme cold conditions. As far as long term use with a Synthetic....I still would change it out on a regular interval.

Dang! Let it be known that I am a believer in that the Wedgewood Blue 6.0 PSDs have more power and overall torque than the others . . . . nice truck, man.

I drive highway 99.9% of the time, do about 38k miles in a 12 month period and change my oil on or about 6k miles. Going anything over that, the oil seems to be in too bad of a shape. If I pull ANYTHING during that time, I change at 4k.

Welcome to the "other" side.

Keeseter, I recently had an oil analysis performed on a 5,000 miles OCI with 2,300 of those miles towing a 7,400 lb load in the mountains during July (very hot temps). Based on the results, I could have easily extented longer (using Mobil1 Truck & SUV 5w40).

I'm still planning to stay with 5,000 mile OCI but it's nice to know I could go further...
