I have searched the posts and haven't run across a similar problem so I'm deciding to post and see if anyone can help. I have a 1996 Explorer Limited w/ 150K miles. A couple weeks ago, when I started my car and was just idling, a squeaking noise came from the engine. I would compare it to the sound of a wheel that needs oil squeaking. After I began driving, the noise stopped so i didn't worry about it. Since then, it has become more frequent and now happens often while I'm driving as well. Does anyone know the cause of this and can help!? I don't claim to be that smart about cars but if there is any additional information I can give you for you to diagnose this problem I'll try.
Check the obvious first, belt, idler pulley, and tensioner. Statr the vehicle with the belt off, if it still squeals the check the crank shaft position / fuel injection syncronizer. Basically this is a distributor half shaft with a electrical connection on top. The bushings go dry and then it squeals. if this is the case it is very critical that the replacement is aligned properly.
