I have a 98 expedition with the mach audio system. I was trying to hook up a new amp and subs. I have the power and gnd's run to the amp, no problems there. I thought my amp had speaker level hook-ups on, turns out it just has rca. So I bought the speaker wire to rca adapter. My thought was to use the input for the stock amp/sub for my new subs. Because the input for the stock sub is only one channel, I ran the pos side to both pos on the adapter and the neg to both neg's on the adapter, and gave it test run......Nothing. After I disconnected everything and returned it to its stock setup I still had nothing. Every function of the head-unit still works just no sound. I have an associates in electronics tech, so I'm not an idiot when it comes to electronics, however that doesn't mean I don't screw things up from time to time. Sorry for the long post wanted to get as much info in it as possible. I'm about ready to buy a new head-unit anyway, so if it is dead I wouldn't cry over it for to long.
Thanks for any help.
Suggestion, just buy that new head unit and be done with it. Then you can have your subs and amp and a good system to power it. May have just overloaded the system, fuse isn't the problem since the display and all still works.
Hmm... I say play around with it a little bit, if it doesn't work get the new HU and re-wire, it's not hard at all, just a little time consuming. I haven't messed with the Mach system's at all, I know their subs blow a lot, and that's all I know.
Your best bet as far as knowing it will work, and also sound quality is to get a new HU (preferably with 3-sets of RCA plugs for further system expansion) and re-run your wiring to the speakers from there, or utilize all of your RCA's and get a 5-channel amp to run everything. Just my opinion, not sure where to go in your case.
I think the MACH system has an external amp from the head unit, you might check the manual to see if indeed there is a seperate fuse for the ext. amp. I recently bought a new HU with mp3 and wma capability and wish I'd done that a long time ago, much nicer to only have one or two disc with all the songs I want on them.
