Well, I did it, After being a faithful V-10 owner for three years, I just went and traded her in on a 2002 F-250 7.3 auto CC, SB. I have to admit, that 7.3 is awesome! Whole different experience. I've looked her up and down and the truck is extremely clean, hardly a scratch anywhere, only 48000 miles. Maybee you guys can help me out with a question though. Did all 2002 Powerstrokes have catalytic converters? I don't have one and if someone put in a pipe, it was a pretty clean install. Everything looks pretty factory. Thanks for the help.
Congrats danfordnut. I too have recently been "converted" & I can't imagine ever going back to a gasser. Actually I always loved diesels but couldn't afford one. My 02 does not have a cat (exhaust was stock when I got it.) I don't think any 02's had one but somebody will correct me if this isn't true. I agree that the 7.3 is an awsome engine.
From what has been said on here before, it depends on where the truck was bought and that state's emissions laws. Some haVe cats and some don't. Be glad your's doesn't, unless of course you live in one of those states and you have to endure vehicle inspections. Not really sure how that would pan out.
I have had my 02, since feburary, traded my 94 f150 with 250k on it. I will never go back to gas. the 7.3 is awesome, but I have to remember the extra weight when stopping suddenly.
My 02 has a 6sp and has a cat. Supposedly only the 6sp had the cats because you control the transmission shifts as opposed to a computer. I'm thinking about gutting the cat, seems I have some restriction in it from age. It feels slower than when new.
Thanks for the info guys. I guess since it's an auto, it shouldn't have one. That's just fine with me ! This is the first week-end since I brought her home, so I've been checking things out. I got another question for you all though. I know it's normal for these engines to do the usual diesel clatter, but I've got a knock from the driver's side. It's not as deep as a rod knock and it's coming from the head. It's more pronounced when hot and it totally goes away over about 1000 rpm. Some sort of fuel or injector problem maybee? Thanks for the help.

That is the infamous idle knock that Ford denies exists. No.8 injector is on the same fuel rail as No. 6, and fires right after No. 6, so it gets starved for fuel. Ford's fix was to put a different injector in No. 8. As you can tell, it didn't solve the problem. If you want to find out more, do a search in the 7.3 forum for "Idle Knock".
A regulated return fuel system will fix that, along with getting rid of the Long Lead injector at the same time, but thats a lot of work.
Look into doin the in tank mods, and getting rid of EVERY quick coupler before the fuel pump, they allow air to enter the fuel lines, and that is why you are getting a knock, its starved for fuel, and its airated.
Flinno18, you will have to do some searching but some places will allow a turbo to pass as a "muffler". where and how to find I have no clue, just been passed on to me from other people.

If you do the fuel return, you should also replace the injector.

Actually, doing the tank and prepump mods is what made my engine quiet enough that I could hear the knock.
There are a lot of bone stock 7.3s out there with 300,000 miles. My tendency is to believe Ford and IH that the knock is not a serious condition.
