Temp Sender Location

Hey guys, I am getting ready to put an oil cool and tranny (seperate) cool on my 1978 Ford F-250. They are going in front of the radiator and I am wondering where I could put the temp senders. I have a few thoughts. My initial idea was to use the sender as the drain pluf for both pans but thought they would be too exposed to damage. My other thought was to put the sender on the lines. That wouldn't be too big of a problem, I would just use line taps, but I want to know where you are supposed to put them to get the CORRECT reading. Thanx

i added a electric temp gauge to the side of my trans
pan. it doesn't seem to be in any danger of damage.
it seems to work really well.

I put fittings in both pans and used a three way switch to a single temp. guage. Works fine. I also have external filters for both and these often come with a place to screw in a temp sensor.
