ok i am sure this topic has been beat to death but i am gonna ask anyways as i haven't been able to find it in the 100+ pages google gave me or through the FTE search
I am swapping my stock 3-on-the-tree for an NP435 on my 72 half cab. i have a 435 in my possession. will the bellhousing from the 3 speed swap over to the 435? i am pretty sure it will but i wanted to make sure.
also i am kind of nervous b/c i measured the stickout length of the input shaft and it's about 5 3/4" not the 6 1/2" i have read about, which is suppsedly ideal. will i have a problem with this? or will i need to dig up another 435? also anyone know of the different length stickout measurements?
thanx fellas

i am guessin it is a 2wd since there is a yoke on the output of the rear. i honestly dont know what it came out of as it was sitting a j-yard close by my house already pulled (talk about almost too easy to be true)
I have never heard about different length output shafts other than these three- 1 short 2wd (like you have, with the bolt on yoke) 2- 4wd, has longer shaft, but obviously no yoke, has common fullsize ford 31 spline. 3-long 2wd, has an extremely long tailshaft, just like a 2wd c-6 auto tranny, also has 31 splines and uses a slip in yoke like the 2wd c-6( I am not totally shure, but near as I can tell, Ford started using these about 1980)
I think the difference is the bolt pattern on the back of the tranny. If it's square, it came out of a 2wd, if it's a trapazoid (narrower on top), then you have a 4WD version and the adapters to the T-case aren't readily available. Do you already have the adapter?
Original question: I believe that both versions of the NP435 will bolt up to your bell housing. I KNOW the 2wd version will as I did this swap.
i have the 3-speed to D20 adapter... other than that no, i have no adapter. i think i will bve ordering an adapoter kit as i am getting antsy to go play again!
That's the most expensive part of the whole swap. You might check the for sale section over at www.classicbroncos.com as sometimes they roll through there. Of see if someone local is making them. Otherwise they are another $425 from Advance adapters. Make sure of your bolt pattern on the rear of the tranny before you order.
yea i have just recently sign up on CB.com and so far its been an awesome site! although i feel like an idiot not knowing the basics, lol. o well though, gotta start somewhere
That's where I started and then I'm still in my twenties, so sometimes that factors in too, but all in all it's a great group. In fact we are in the process now of building a bronco for a serviceman serving in IRAQ. He bought the bronco, but all the parts and labor are being donated to build it up...without his knowing we hope.
