hey im getting fake duals i guess you would call um(one pipe splitting into 2)_ and i want it to be as loud as it can be. as of know im just gonna run straight pipes but it has 4 cats on it. and the exhaust guy said he cant take um off first becuase its illegal and second it would run real ****ttttty. but other people have told me i can remover one? idk but i just want it to be a real nice low ton loud sound. sop soes anyone know the answers to any of these questions and also how loud wil it be (5.4L)?
Any cat AFTER the O2s will not cause a problem if they are removed. Any cat before the O2s will cause a CEL, unless you install MIL eliminators to fool them.
The engine's computer (PCM) uses information from the pre-catalytic convertor oxygen sensors to determine rich/lean fuel trim values. The post-catalyst sensors' only function is to monitor the efficiency of the catalytic convertors. This is OBD2 mandated. If the catalytic convertors are removed, the post-catalytic sensors will mimic the pre-cat sensor readings and the check engine light will come on due to a perceived efficiency problem with the cats.
MIL eliminators are installed to send the PCM a voltage reading that would mirror a 'healthy' catalytic convertor. This would be in the 350-550 millivolt range and fluctuate between those voltages slowly.
There is no harm in removing the cats (besides emissions, duh) that will cause a driveability issue. The CEL will come on, but you can always use it as a backlight for a family picture or something.
I think you'd get an OK tone from the exhaust if you left the cats. Obviously it's not going to be super-loud. However you have to think that if you have no catalytic convertors and no mufflers, just pipe, you're going to be lucky if you get a decent tone from the exhaust. Chances are without any kind of resonating device, all you'll get is a nasty "blatty" tone and a real crappy sound at idle.
straight pipe doesnt sound good.. believe me. Its all loud, but thats it. I've heard expo's with a single FM40 and dualed out the back. It sounded good. Still had cats on.
