Just noticed the paint covering peeling from my rear differential cover, as if it is getting too hot? I tow a 28ft boat and wondering if I need to worry about it. 2005 SD CC SB 4X w/V10 4.10 gearing I believe. Oh yeah just broke 10,000 miles.
That happens to most of us. Be sure to check the fluid level in the differential just to be sure it's not low (it's probably not), then start planning to paint or eventually replace the cover.
When I drove mine off the lot, most of the paint had already peeled off and the rest was quite rusty. Don't get me started on the amount of rust on everything else underneath. Don't do it! Build date of 3/05 bought it 5/05... Kentucky baby!
I was told by somebody here on FTE that it's normal; although, my 02 didn't have much rust underneath to speak of. I was also told that it's just surface rust and it's nothing to worry about.
When I have the drive to do it, I'm just going to do what bullet did... scrub it and paint it. As for the rest, leave it.
I've been wanting to scrub all the rust off underneath my truck and repaint it all. Any of you have any luck with something like this? Just want a thick black paint that'll stop/prevent rust.
I have considered using some undercoat. You get the advantage of sound deadening as well as the rubberized protection. Sounds like a win-win situation except for the cleanup from the overspray. I have already sprayed the floorpans and bed from underneath but have yet to tackle the frame and stuff. If you use undercoat just keep it off driveshafts as the extra weight may create a vibration.
