Overdrive Trans Life Extender
I just bought a 94 F350 4X4 460 AOD
The previous owner said it is on its 3rd trans (123K)
I would like to know from you experts what I can do to get a good life
out of this trans (cooler, deep pan, shift improver kit?)
Regular fluid changes are critical, as is keeping the fluid temperature down with a good cooler. It should already have one, but it may be operating at less than peak efficiency after 12 years of service. It maybe be partially plugged up or the air may not be flowing through it the way it should.
The recommended fluid change interval is 30k miles, but I would do mine every 12k. Change the filter as well.
A shift kit is a good idea. They reduce the amount of slippage, cutting down on the heat produced.
You also might want to install a tranny temp gauge so you'll know when it's getting too warm.
Oh yeah, welcome to FTE.
