Use a lot of penetrating fluid, small ratchet, and patience on the pivot bolts. I have snapped off a few of them in haste and paid for it fixing my handy work.
I haven't done this in a while but as I remember just let it down halfway and flip the supports up. Then you can pull them off and lift one side of the gate up out of the cradle and pull the other out sideways.
Then again maybe I spent too much time in San Francisco in the 60s.
BearTracks, you must be thinking of the '80 and up Fords. All the '70s Fords have to be unbolted (all the ones I've seen). I would rather be able to just slide it out but it won't...gotta use the wrenches...
hey guys back in the eight's i had to take the tailgate off all the time to put the camper on. so one day i was a junk yard and say a ford truck about 81 or 82 with the tailgate pivot taht is slotted so i bought it and it bolts right on to the my 77 truck and then i got out the grinder and cut a slot in the tailgate. now i can lift it out whenever i need to. no problem!! good lick leo vargas
