I would like to hear opinions on what is the better oil filter and why.
I have always used fram filters, never prefiller a filter and never had valve rattle on the initial start-up.
Upon reading other threads here it seems that the general consencus is that fram is "crap"
Another question I have is if you were to buy a mororcraft filter from wal-mart is it the same exact filter one would get from the dealer parts counter? The reason I ask this is because alot of things (although the name is the same) are not the same.
Examples of what I mean are... a delta faucet from lowe's is not the same as a delta from Noland co. and Michelin tires from sam's are not the same as from an independant tire retailer, just to name a few.
just trying to get an education here
please give me some opinions and why you may feel that way.
the mc oil and filters are the same as sold by your dealer. i would use hte fl8020s on a modular enigne because they really need a special anti drain back valve which the stock one has. the mc filter also has a threaded end bypass unlike fram. the ford also uses a synthetic media in it and metal end caps. the mc oil is made by conoco phillips from hydrocracked base oils imported from korea.
Michelin tires at SAMS are not the same from independant retailers. I have to disagree unless SAMS has a special model. Like for like models are the same! Same goes for faucets.
A good example for a spec difference is the Dunlop Rover LT tire sold at Sears which has a specific model just for Sears, and other retailers can't sell them. LT series are not available outside of Sears!
So as long as you have the same model designation the products are the same!

I would agree. Ford would be in serious trouble if an FL-820S was different from retailer to retailer. Especially when they state that is what they recommend.

yeah, if the model#'s are the same. what I was speaking of is what you are talking about products specific to a certain store made by their spects. I hadn't thought of the filter # being the same,so I would guess they are the same.
But I do believe from experience that alot of products you buy from these mega stores are lower quality that from specialized professional stores. It's not just the price that's different.
enough said on that!!!
Gashog, the hte fl8020s. What kind of filter is that ? Motorcraft or what? Also I know what an antidrain back valve is but please explain to me why it matters where in the filter it is and other than the filter media what difference does the other materials make "end caps you spoke of"
I've never cut a filter open so other than pics in ads I don't know whats in them. I'm just looking for some basic knowledge here.

I think he meant THE fl820s. As far as an anti-drainback valve, it keeps oil that is in the passages above the filter from draining back into the pan. That way oil gets to the overhead cams much quicker. You don't get dry starts where you get a lot of valve noise, and less wear on start up.
The quality of products do vary from a mega store to a store that specializes in one certain thing. For example go and buy a Moen Faucet at Menards, and than go Buy One from Pipeline Supply(They are A plumbing store). I bet anyone the Moen faucet from menards will last a 1/4 of the life of the one from pipeline supply, and if you don't belive me, buy one from menards and buy one from pipeline supply and take them apart and compare, there is a big difference.
I disagree, if the same model is sold by mom and pop or by specialty store, it comes off the same line. Manufacturers are not going to build multiple lines producing the same model with different quality in mind. They are not going to vary the line utilizing lesser quality based on where sold model for model! Now if the model is different, then all bets are off! Your large volume stores have leverage on purchase price based on volume ordering vs. a small specialty store who sells much less!
As far as MOEN, if I purchase the same model ( not parent name), the quality will be the same between the two. If the quality were different for the same model, the manufacturer would have a warranty claims nightmare, and would loose all control where what gets shipped where! The KEY IS THE SAME MODEL. A model can vary under a parent name based on configuration.
Victory faucet model XYZ at Menards and Victory faucet model HIJ sold at a plumbing supply store can vary in quality. The reason being the model designates the configuration!
So as a buyer you have to compare models not parent names!
True!!! but the average consumer is not going to look at a model #. That's just the way we are. If they see item X in store A that's 250.00 and an item in store B that physically looks the same as item X but is 175.00 they just assume they are getting a better deal at store B.
If you don't believe me go in business for yourself and try dealing with the general public on an everyday basis.
I own a glass replacement shop and the average customer has no concern with Quality. There only aspect on the sale is how far they will have to dig in their pocket. No, everyone is not like that (Praise GOD) but many are!
How about some comments on my original question please.
