I don't belive any 390 ever came with solid lifters from ford. But, that doesn't mean it hasn't changed. I don't know if you can tell without pulling the intake or a lifter?

The 1961 and 1962 390 HP, 375 horsepower and the 1962 thru 1965 390 PI, 330 horsepower engines had mechanical cams. All others were hydraulic cams. Mechanical cams have adjustable rockers which require more valve cover clearance (Called a pent roof valve cover. They look domed.), so if you have flat topped valve covers they are hydraulic non-adjustables.
