'77 starter problems

Hey guys, I have a little problem. I have gone through 3 starters in 2 years. The 3rd one was even a brand new one and not a reman. The problem is that they are getting really hot! What I cant figure out is, what is causing it??? The coolant temp stay pretty steady around 195/200 on my aftermarket gauge. I've noticed that after driving it for over an hour, the engine bay gets so hot that you cant touch anything. Any Ideas? I replaced the clutch fan for a full time belt driven one and it help the last starter last long than the other two. Im at my wits end. I need to sell this truck, but i cant in good conscience do it knowing there is this problem.
Thanks
Styder

i'm no expert,
but have you tried looking for a short either in your starter relay/ power wire to starter? it could cause overheating of starter. as for your engine temp that sounds about right on your aftermarket gauge and the engine will most likely be too hot to touch fpr very long after an hour of driving! is your tranny getting really hot? i dunno if this helps but maybe its a place to start.
just my two cents,
nick.

You didn't say whether or not you had headders , I'll assume you don't!!!The most obvious things to check\replace---thermostat , radiator cap , I believe I would just pull the radiator(assuming the truck is running o.k , neither too lean or other problems)and have it rodded out, new thermostat , cap , and possibly even hoses---and maybe even a new sending unit for your temp dash gauge--in addition to this Summit sells a very nice heat shield\wrap for your starter for about 30 or so...........I think autozone or somebody sells a diagnostic kit that is supposed to be very good in finding problems with cooling systems!!!fd

Thanks guys. I hadnt thought of checking for a short. With this last starter, I put all new battery cables and starter cable, but I didnt look at the I/S wires. Yeah, I had thought about the starter sheild, but was hoping i could track down teh culprit first. I'll probably get one anyway.
Thanks again!
