My owners manual recommends 5W30 for 2000 F150, 5.4, 89,000 miles ...
So, since it's first oil change I've used Mobil 1 5w30 at regular, reasonable intervals. The "newer" 5.4's recommend 5w20 (not sure what year that changed from 5w30 to 5w20?). Anyway ...
My question is: Without incurring any damage, can I switch to Motorcraft 5w20 (which is syn blend, I believe). I'm mainly looking at the cost diff beween Mobil 1 and MC. Does MC make a full syn 5w30? Never seen it.
I made a similar switch with a 1995 F150 5.0. I had been using Mobil 1 10w30 for at least 45000 miles and switched to Motorcraft 10w30 blend with no problems. You should encounter no problems switching to Motorcraft 5w20 blend. It is a very good oil at a reasonable price. FYI, Kendall GT1 ,Motorcraft, and Trop artic blends are each part of the Conoco/Philips family.
The Motorcraft 5W-20 will service your needs for the 5.4 just fine, as long as you adhere to a 5,000+/- oil change interval. Ford came out with this oil in 2001 and back spec'd many engines that previously required 5W-30. Ironically since you are using Mobil 1 5W-30 the hot viscousity is just about the same as Motorcraft 5W-20. From various UOA's the Motorcraft 5W-20 really holds up well in 5,000+/- mileage usage. Again if you are changing your oil at around the 5,000 mark and your driving is not truly severe then the Motorcraft 5W-20 will do fine. But for peace of mind you might do an UOA. This will determine the best mileage usuage for the oil.
